Shittalking with your shooting buddies is a good option at local matches, at important matches there is no waiting, I'm constantly preparing for the next stage, watching shooters, memorizing stage plan and so on.

Recycling my response from seabass' training diary about the same issue:
To point out the obvious, stop getting angry. Go put your feet up somewhere, eat some snacks, hydrate, check Instagram, and get back into game mode when it appears the other squad is nearing finish. Spending emotional energy on something you have zero control over is a tremendous waste.

One of the areas I struggle with the most at a match is the waiting. I am having a tough time not getting frustrated and mentally checking out. That "I just want to get out of here" attitude is something I really want to avoid this season. How do you guys handle the late starts, delays, and slow pace that seem to happen at many matches? Although I am not a new shooter I know I have a lot to learn.
Thanks
Transition to Open, you'll spend every second cleaning mags, stretching springs, and trying to figure out the latest problem with your blaster in the safe area. Your name will get called way too quick don't worry.

I struggled with the boredom for the first couple matches, then I started acting like less of a retard. If you are not doing something while you are waiting, you are doing it entirely wrong.
Before I shoot, I spend every spare moment visualizing the stage and preparing for my run.
After I shoot, I clean and reload mags, reset, and help run the timer or scorepad at local matches. I am generally busy pretty much the whole time now.

Get off your ass and help things move faster. Setup. Score. Paste. Reset.
If the waiting is something you truly can't help fix (lazy-ass MD, squad of retards ahead) only then you can slack off to the porta can to crack one off.

I liked SlivGods line about wasting my energy on something I have zero control over. Honestly never thought of it like that.

Step 1: Get an RO certification
Step 2: Tell people to hurry the fuck up
Step 3: DQ 10.6.1 for unsportsmanlike conduct, failure to comply with the reasonable direction of a match official.
Step 4: (optional) If they stick around and cry about it, 10.6.2 Expelled from the range, for conduct an RO deems unacceptable.

At a local if you are waiting and bored, you are doing it wrong.
Get off your ass and help things move faster. Setup. Score. Paste. Reset.
If the waiting is something you truly can't help fix (lazy-ass MD, squad of retards ahead) only then you can slack off to the porta can to crack one off.
And then I read this:
I can honestly say he definitely pulls his weight as for helping with reset. The problem is he has the patience of a three year old.
So, I’ll just direct you to BEnos where the sanctimonious derps can preach to you about patience, Zen and finding your center.

Listening to the self sponsored shooters getting you down? Bring a hooker with you to jam mags and talk dirty to you while you are waiting.

Bring a GameBoy or your dog and play with those if you're not talkative.
Or switch to USPSA or darts or something if you find it so boring that you can't focus for a few hours.
I've never shot a full steel challenge match but between shooting the shit with people, doing RO work here and there, wrasslin' the dog, surfing the web on my phone, loading mags, and filling my face with whatever food is available it's not hard to stay active. Hell, go for a jog or a nap if you need to.
